The wait is over.

Well it's been 3 years since our last cruise and to say we can't wait, would be an understatement. Having both lost quite a bit of weight  over the last 6 months, Perdita and I have both spent the last couple of weekends updating our wardrobes (let's hope it wasn't a waste with all the food and drink to try whilst we are onboard).It's strange whenever we pack to go away we always find numerous part tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes, and out of date suncream, which off course we always replace. One day we will learn and just throw it all away after our trip, or more likely, with Perdita being a bit tight, using it up when we get home. The only other trauma we avoided was spotting Perdita had packed 2 right foot walking sandals instead of a pair I'm not sure it was a accident or so  she could loose me when I was following her footprints in the sand.

COVID has brought quite a few changes to the way the cruise line and airport now operate, meaning lots of extra paperwork to bring,and longer queueing times at the airport and the cruise terminal, we were able to book our hold luggage in the day before which was an hour we will never get back, but it did speed the process up on departure day, and we made the most of it and stopped over in Manchester, so we didn't have to get up quite as early for our flight, which was at 6.10AM.

When we left for the airport the weather was reliably British to say the least, being wet and drab. Security caused no problems, we were through in 15 minutes and had chance for a chill before boarding. Unfortunately take off was delayed by an hour and a half, apparently Las Palmas was busier than expected(no shit Sherlock it is the 1st weekend of the school holidays in the UK.) Fortunately for us the Pilot put his foot hard down to the metal and we made up 45 minutes. The worst part was having to wait over an hour for our baggage to come around on the conveyor belt. Perdita was beginning to get anxious , when it finally showed, obviously taking it the night before , meant it went on the plane 1st and came off last, ( another hour we will never get back.) At least when we did emerge from the airport, the weather had take a turn for the better. We spent the rest of the day getting to grips with the layout of the ship, which is considerably larger than the Celebration( our only previous floating hotel.)



The next day was this week's day at set at sea so we just spent the day relaxing and getting a bit more familiar with the layout of the ship and enjoying the sun sea, food and drink.



The following day we woke bright and breezy in Gibraltar, which is one of the 2 places to visit on my bucket list.

 Today we stopped of at Cartagena(not the one in Columbia), I say this because every time I Google things to do in Cartagena the Columbian Cartagena comes up first. We have been here before and wanted to try something new and as a special treat for Perdita ( I have been promising her one for weeks if she walked up the rock on Gibraltar)  which she did on Thursday with lots of puffing and panting, dirty looks and even a few choice words. She even said she hated me( remember how that feels Bare), and for a time I think she really meant it. I had booked us in to go to an equestrian centre, to go for a hack( I am a novice, though Perdita is quite proficient) I had researched for this and we had to catch the Alsa L14 bus at the bus terminus, so when we got off the ship we got a map and the lady giving them out marked on the map the route we should take.We set of and arrived there in good time to catch said bus. Chocolate, rum and a handmade cigar.

            Today's destination is Amber Cove in the Domican Republic, we had booked to go diving down some waterfalls, however my knee has been playing up for the last  couple of days and although the first part of the trip was by coach, the last 40 minutes involve quite a severe up hill climb, so I reluctantly gave in to Perdita's sensible side, and we changed our trip to a more sedate Flavours of Puerta Plata (meaning silver port) tour. The tour started at 12.30 pm and 1st stage involved a coach trip to a local farm,out in the sticks, where we were treated to a taster of 3 rums, all from the same company(Brugal), one a young dark rum, another aged in American whiskey casks and a white rum, the aged one had been aged for 10 years and was obviously the  best and being a rum drinker I bought a bottle to enjoy once I got back home with friends. Houston we have a problem!!!!

          The next day was the half way point of our adventure, so dictated we were back at Port Canaveral for the swap over of new passengers and crew, it also meant that everyone on board had to get off the ship to go through the American immigration checks, this included all the crew members as well. Some of the life boat had been lowered, though I am not sure if that was for planned maintenance or do the immigration officers could do spot checks for stowaways or maybe a bit of both.           We had booked ourselves on a full day excursion to  Cape Canaveral Space Center, which was the most expensive trip we had booked at over £100 each, so we had high expectations. I deliberately left out one thing in earlier blogs, thinking it would fit into this nicely. On our 1st day whilst we were leaving Port Canaveral we were lucky enough to witness a space launch, which was amazing and probably the highlite of the holiday so far.
