Mooching around Riga

Today is our last day in Riga, so we just had a mooch around, the guided tour yesterday was good, but you didn't get chance to stop at anything, if it looked like it might have been worth some extra exploration.

So after breakfast to toddled of to the central market to have a look around, and to say it is huge is an understatement, there are five halls, one for meat, one for fish, 2 for general groceries and the like, and one which was out of use because the roof was being repaired, then outside  was clothing and fruit and veg, which might move indoor when the roof has been finished. To my suprise Perdita had left it to our last day in Riga to pick up the shot glass an post card (I will take her temperature when we get home, she may be coming down with something).

From there we went to the house of the Blackheads, which since it was destroyed in world war 2 (along with the rest of the square it forms one side of) has been completely rebuilt, and is now a very opulent banqueting hall, use to entertain visiting dignitaries, when they come to visit Latvia, including our Very own Queen Elizabeth, and David Cameron. The basement level has been used to house a museum about the place in particular and Riga in general.

By the time we had finish in there time was getting on, so decided to stop of at Riga's most romantic Cafe (their words not mine). It was a nice small quaint place, with lots of tat on display, I certainly would like to be the one that had to dust it all. The young girl working there certainly earned her wages, although it wasn't massive it had 2 floors, and she had to take the orders make the drinks, and deliver them to their respective buyers. In our case it was a flat white and a Baily's hot chocolate and two large slices of cake.

While cafe was close be we had a look at the three brothers, which are actually houses next door to each other, which are suppose to be the oldest houses in Riga that have been destroyed and rebuilt at some time in history. Walking back to the digs we also caught the powder tower.

As we had an early flight in the morning, we not out early for a bite to eat, and tried in my case to have an early night. Next stop the airport for 4 am and back in Blighty for 7am.

Pongo and Perdita signing off til our next trip.
