Marmaris to Athens
Hi all, and welcome to our latest adventure on the open seas. This first blog covers the first three days as Perdita says it is too challenging to get internet out of the EU for sporadic days we are, but knowing her as well as I do, she means it cost too much!!!
We left good old Blightie on Monday the 29th and traveled to Marmaris in Turkey, where we transferred to our old friend the Marella Discovery. We have opted for a balcony cabin, which does put the price up a bit, but it's worth it to be able to feel the wind on your face whilst your alone on your balcony instead of jostling for places to sit on the upper decks.
It's a small but comfortable setting but the views will definately change.
Our first day was our first sea day and as such there isn't much to report. Then we arrived at Athens where the adventure begins.
After dissembarking the ship we got on our coach transfer from the port of Piraeus into downtown Athens, where we were dropped of at Hadrian's Arch, which would also be our pick up point for our return to the boat.
We followed the pedestrianised path around the south and west side of the mount, on top of which the acropolis and the Parthenon are situated, we only had a 4 hour window to explore Athens, so decided not to try to get in anything but just explore as much of the city as we could.
We then had a mooch around the Anafiotika and Plaka areas of the town which were both a mix of quaint olde worldie and modern bars and shops, where you could virtually anything, including a couple of disposable vapes as my good old British one was struggling to cope with the heat.
We then made our way to the parliamentary building, where we managed to catch the changing of the guard, I don't envy those guys having to stand at their post for an hour in this heat.
Then it was time to head off back to the coach, with just enough time for Perdita and to order us both a Greek yoghurt and pomegranate ice cream, which certainly hit the spot.
Pongo and Perdita signing off for today.
